Unplugged for BlackBerry

Unplugged Engine for BlackBerry®

Enterprise BlackBerry, Notes Mobile, Xpage MobileExtend Lotus Notes® to BlackBerry, simply

Extending your existing Notes®/Domino® applications to enterprise BlackBerry® devices should be pretty straightforward, right? Not so fast.

Currently, developers must create Domino XPages mobile applications that BlackBerry enterprise users access via the Web. This leads to slow performance, and an inability to use the app without a high quality wireless connection. Often, users won’t use the application at all, because it’s too much of a hassle.

Creating custom native applications with a local data store and a mobile sync capability will solve this problem. However native app development can be expensive, with a steep learning curve for each mobile platform, which takes time your developers don’t have these days.

Use your existing design tools

The Unplugged XPages Engine drastically simplifies the job of creating custom mobile apps with mobile sync for enterprise BlackBerry devices. Working with Notes 8.5.1 and above, the Unplugged Engine enables your developers to add new mobile XPages—which act as views and forms for their current data—to existing applications. Unplugged XPages Engine developers work with the standard Domino Designer tools within the standard Eclipse IDE. This means that the entire mobilization process is within their current skill set. Also, any future maintenance, such as added features or bug fixes, can be performed in-house, fast. There is no need to climb the learning curve of a new and complex mobile application development platform.

Increase reliability and resilience

Because the Unplugged XPages Engine includes a local data store on the BlackBerry device, any applications you build will be reliable and resilient, even when your wireless signal is weak. The Unplugged XPages Engine stores Notes databases and information on the BlackBerry itself, and updates with the Domino server via a mobile sync process.  So end users can access data, such as customer information, from anywhere with a familiar, easy-to-navigate user interface.

Why use the Unplugged XPages Engine?

A quick summary of the benefits from the Unplugged approach:

  • Fully-functional custom apps can be created quickly for enterprise BlackBerry devices (as compared to primitive field-mapping apps)
  • End users are presented with a familiar, easy-to-navigate user interface
  • Reliable operation: mobile apps with mobile sync just work, even if signal strength is weak
  • No need to buy a specialized mobile app dev platform
  • No expensive specialized consultants required, use existing skillsets
  • No need to develop a new set of enterprise software connectors
  • A reduction in the number of system components means fewer points of potential failure
